Fab Merrett and Al Warren are two talented professionals who love playing music in a smooth jazz style. Fab (aka Fabio Mereghetti) is a keyboardist who records and plays with his band Cherry Pickers around Europe but in reality he is a creative director, while Al (aka Alberto Guariglia), guitarist and studio recording artist for different bands, in life he is a doctor. They are old friends, having known each other from a very young age and their passion for music has always kept them united. They have often played live together but have never recorded music in the studio; the lockdown was an opportunity make up for it and consolidate some ideas and arrangements made over the past years, create new ones, and realize the album “Golden Smooth Jazz Oldies”, a series of elegant smooth jazz renditions of songs of the ‘60s, arranged in a creative and innovative yet sometimes surprising way. The project revisits both popular international hits and somewhat forgotten tunes that today’s audience can rediscover in these versions by Merrett & Warren. What is also new about “Golden Smooth Jazz Oldies”, is that most of the songs have never been revisited by artists in the smooth jazz genre; thus, some of the album’s tracks, which have always been considered simply “pop” by everyone, may now become “new standards”. The tracks on the album were recorded remotely during the pandemic, with musicians from Milan, Verona, Turin, Naples and Malaga (Spain), collaborating from their respective studios. A real challenge! Despite this, thanks to the wise mix that the sound engineer Pippo Muciaccia has made in his studio in Milan, the sound is compact, catchy and you can hear a phenomenal interplay between the various musicians, who share a similar feeling and taste.
All arrangements and productions are by Fab Merrett & Al Warren. In addition to Fab and Al, the band is made up of Sergio Quintero Garcia on bass, Fabio Buono on drums/percussion, Stefano De Palma on sax and Carlo Fontana on trumpet. The songs are partly instrumental and partly sung. In fact, “Golden Smooth Jazz Oldies” features the participation of singer/songwriter Dagmar Segbers with her charming voice, the Italian acapella group Alti&Bassi and the English duo Dukes of Burlington, behind which lie the rappers Tyson & Emery.
